The Study Nook

Fuchsia is not native to Ireland, it arrived in the 19th century with Victorian plant collectors who brought it from South America to beautify estates. The plant, named after botanist Leonhard Fuchs, escaped cultivation and naturalized in Irish hedgerows, becoming a common and distinctive sight, especially in the west. In Irish, the plant is known as Deora Dé, or "God's teardrops," a name said to reflect divine compassion.
